8th WCCT – Call for Themes

8th World Chess Composing Tournament of the FIDE (WCCT)
Call for Themes

Dear chess-problem friend,

At the meeting of the PCCC in Halkidiki (September 2004), it was decided to
ask composers to suggest themes for the next (8th) World Chess Composition Tourney
(WCCT). In accordance to this, we would like to invite you to suggest theme(s)
for this event. Please submit your theme suggestions, including example(s),
to Uri Avner, spokesman of the WCCT sub-committee (addresses below). Your suggestions
should reach us as soon as possible, and no later than June 15, 2005.
The WCCT sub-committee will decide upon the final selection in Greece, Sept.
2005. After that, the 8th WCCT will be officially announced.

The WCCT includes the following 7 sections: 2-movers, 3-movers, more-movers,
studies, selfmates, helpmates, fairies. You may suggest themes in any of these
sections.

We offer the following guidelines, drawn up by the WCCT subcommittee.

A theme that is suitable for the WCCT should:

(i) be not too easy, but at the same time not so hard as to discourage less
talented composers;
(ii) offer scope for imaginative settings and, ideally, originality;
(iii) allow the composer to introduce strategic play.
